Statistics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for Calendar Year 2024
A Look at Church Statistics for the year ending December 31, 2024
During General Conference, the Church announced membership statistics by continent. Note: You can also drill down into individual countries within a continent. The data source.

Here's the data by continent (No data for Antartica):

Area Members % of Total Missions % of Total Temples % of Total
Worldwide 17,255,394 100% 450 100% 202 100%
North America 9,733,719 56% 187 42% 131 65%
South America 4,392,463 25% 104 23% 29 14%
Europe 513,534 3% 37 8% 14 6%
Asia 1,316,373 8% 51 11% 11 5%
Pacific Islands 607,302 3% 17 4% 11 5%
Africa 933,511 5% 39 12% 10 5%
The percentages have not changed much even if you go back a few years. The church is predominantly a western hemisphere church. Asia and Africa are up by 1% since 2021.

Church membership growth cotinues its upward trend, however that trend seems to be flattening in recent years. For 2024 church membership increased 1.5%

Note: The church has chosen not to release the number of members who have been removed from church records. This would include those who have passed away and those excommunicated or who requested that their membership record be destroyed. Knowing these numbers would allow greater insights into church membership dynamics.

The church has also not released the number of children of record who were baptized. Again this number would give greater insights into membership dynamics.

Next we will look at misionary work. This category provides numerous ways to view what's happening.

The most stunning statistic of all was the growth in the number of Church Missions. The church added 36 new missions on July 1, 2024 brining the total to 450. Several missions were splt such as the Thailand and Cambodia into into two missions. In 2013 the number of missions grew to 405 from 347 as the number of available missionaries also sky rocketed.

The number of full-time missionaries serving continues to grow rapidly off of the 2020 low of 51,819 to 74,127 at the end of 2024. The highest count of missionaries in the field wa 85,174 in 2014.

The number of convert baptism rose substantially from 2021 where the number was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of convert baptisms in 2024 was double that of 2021, a remarkable achievement.

As with other missionary statistics the convert baptisms per missionary is on the rise. For 2024 there were 4.3 baptisms per missionary. That's the highest level sine 2012 (4.8 baptisms per missionary). Hopefully this value will contine to increase.

The number of part-time adult church service missionaris was first released n 2010. The number has been abovve 25,000 since 2014.

This year the chruch again released the number of young church service missionaries. A few weeks ago my ward invited a group of twelve young church missionaries to speak in our sacrament meeting. Along with them was their adult mentor couple who argued they should be counted along with the full-time missionaires. The church decided to release this number separately. The total young service missionaries in 2023 was 1,200. The number for 2024 was 4,192 more than double the number for the prior year. Once the sameple size for this category grows to five years I'll create a chart for it.

One of the stranger statistics that the church distributes is the number of children born to church members that were recorded on church records. A more interesting statistic would be the number of children of record baptized. That's a value we don't know. This statistic is only about the reproduction rate among Latter-day Saints. Clearly that birth rate has generally been in a down trend since 2012. Since 2019 no other year has exceeded the 94,266 born that year. This follows the world wide birthrate which shows the rate droping significantly.

The number of temples dedicated has been monotonically increasing since 2021. In 2023 there were 9 temples dedicated. In 2024 that number grew to 16 and should increase annually for several more years. There are atleast two temples that are being rebuilt from scratch. They are the alaska Ancorage Temple and the Provo Utah temple to be knows are the Provo Rock Canyon Temple.
