September 2004
Placitas and Grants New Mexico
September 27, 2004 - Jared celebrated his 20th birthday on P-day. He enjoyed the stuff that people sent him especially the tape from his friends and the tape of his Family singing happy birthday. He added that he thinks he and Elder Everton will get along well and that he is starting to feel comfortable in Grants. Elder Everton is his from Logan Utah and he is Jared's first companion from Utah. He said that he and his companion are assigned to work in both wards and the branch that meet in the Grants' stake center. On Friday the 24th his parents got a call from the mission office. We were told that Jared needed his social security number so that a background check could be run to clear him to enter the prison in Grants since they have an investigator in the Western New Mexico Men's correctional facility. When New Mexico Albq comes up on caller-id your heart flutters until you know what's happened. In this case, thankfully, it was no big deal. We are hoping that Jared spends a few months in Grants so that he can see the fruits of his labors there.
September 20, 2004 - Jared emailed to say that he has been transferred to Grants New Mexico (west of Albuquerque on Interstate 40). He will be serving the the Grants' Stake which is made up of 3 wards (two of which are in Grants) and 3 branches. Because of the continuing drop in the number of missionaries serving in the mission 3 residences mission wide are being closed at this time, one of which is Placitas. Missionaries in Bernalillo will still be able to work in Placitas canyon, but no missionaries will live there. He added things have been crazy as they've had to spend some time clearning the guest house that they have been renting. He said that he was not able to go the the Farrias baptism because he had district leader duties regarding transfers on Saturday night September 18th. His new companion Elder Everton has been out 6 weeks.
September 13, 2004 - Jared emailed to say that the Farrias Family who he taught in the Sage ward (dad and son) are getting baptized; its AWSOME!
In his letter Jared reported "we are slowly starting to find people to teach, but we also know that we are leaving next week as Plaacitas is going to be closed. Barbara has come to church a couple of times and seems to be sincerely interested. We broke the ice with her by helping her paint a portion of her home. Every time I go to a new place it seems we get investigators lined up and then I am transferred, and it would appear that this time is no different. By next week I'll have served in 4 areas already. It seems like I can't get settled anywhere because I am always on the move. "It is weird - I've not liked Placitas at all but now that I have to go somewhere else I don't want to. It is a nice place to live and our Landlords are really nice. I almost think we couild teach them in the near future.
September 6, 2004 - Jared reported that things in Placitas "are pretty crapy". Finding is difficult and this past week. To make his point he related the following story:
We tracted for about 2 hours with no success when we came to a house at the bottom of a hill. It was my companion's door so he knocked and an old man answered who was not wearning a shirt. Before Elder Barney could say anything he said "I lived in Ogden, I've heard it!" and then slammed the door. That's not so bad - we experience the door slamming all the time. He then opened the door and said "Hey you guys look young and in shape, I'll bet you can run to the end of my property before I can get my shot gun!" He slammed the door again and I had to laugh. It's amazing how scared some people are of us. Needless to say we just walked off his property.
Jared concluded by saying: "We'll not much else to say. Not a lot has happened here, but I sure have learned a lot and maybe that's why I came here.
