November 2004
Grants, New Mexico
November 29, 2004 - Jared said the baptisms help this past weekend were simply awsome! Lorrie was baptised at the same baptismal service as her niece Shyanne. Brother Sanchez, Lorrie's brother-in-law baptized his daughter Shyanne and then Elder Haslam baptized Lorrie. Jared wrote "85% of the people who attended the service were non-members and I know that everyone felt the spirit. Since I'd never performed a baptism I was nervous and Lorrie was a bit nervous as well". As I put Lorrie under the water he son Isiah started to cry think his mom was being hurt. The next day the daughter (Raemannda) of a formerly inactive mother was baptized. Lorrie came to support her. Jared wrote "Raemanda seemed to have just been ready and waiting for her baptism".
Jared was so sick on Sunday th 22nd that after ward P.E.C. meeting people asked him how he was feeling. After the meeting the Bishop gave me a blessing in it he told me "see the doctor". The next thing I knew I was talking to the Stake President and shortly after that President Koyle called to find out how I was doing. He asked what appointments we had and then he grounded me to our apartment unless I was going to see the doctor. I still wanted to go out and work, since I felt I could do some, but I followed President Koyle's instructions.
Jared added that he's been a little frustrated by the lack of progress of some of their investigators. With respect to one individual he said "figure it out yourself, or just teach".
With respect to the coming transfers on December 14th Jared wrote "I hope I stay here, but I've never stayed anywhere for more than 3 months. If I do stay here I may be assigned a "greenie". If that happens the pressure will be on for me to do as good a job with him as Elder Landon did with me.
November 22, 2004 - Jared wrote to say he's been quite sick with a terribly sore throat. He said he felt like he couldn't just stay home and rest, bit on the other hand he felt too sick to work hard. He wanted to see a doctor but the help in the mission office advised him to take some vitamin-C. He says his companion just doesn't get sick so he can't userstand why Jared is struggling with colds and sore throats.
He was looking forward to the baptisms scheduled for Thanksgiving weekend. He was told the font is "not complete" but it is in "working order". Some halls have bubble wrap all over them and the kids can't keep away from popping the bubbles.
November 15, 2004 - Jared reported that they have met with Earnest a couple of times. He just wants to talk about how the Sabbath day has been changed and corrupted. He says' "everything must come from the Bible", but apparently his has a difficult time reading. He also said they met Glen. They shared with him the message of the restoration and reported that he felt like this filled a void in his understanding of Christian history. Jared said "everything just seemed to come together as we taught him".
They have a baptism scheduled for Friday and Saturday. The baptismal font at the stake center is still torn up and Jared was worried that it would not be finished in time. Lorrie a sister who is to be baptised this coming weekend was asked at the last minute to fill in for her sister (a member) taking part in the Primary Sacrament presentation on the 14th. Jared said she fit right in the part and will fit right in the ward. He is very excited for those scheduled to be baptised on November 26th and 27th.
Jared added that he enjoys interviewing those who are to be baptised. He said it gives him a perspective on some of the fine people who are joining the church.
November 8, 2004 - Jared reported via Email that stake conference had been held in the Grants' stake and Elder Hillbig was the visiting authority. He also said that Zone conference was held the prior week. He added that his district si doing fine though Elder Hymas was having some problems with his greenie.
He believe that things would improve with them.
November 1, 2004 - Jared Emailed to say that with transfers on the 2nd Elder Slezak is going to Las Vegas New Mexico, and Elder Hymas (from Jared's group) is getting a greenie. Elder Musser has been sent to Cortez, Colorado while Elder Landon is still in the Sage ward in Albuquerque.
Jared wrote on Halloween eveing after 7PM because the missionaries were asked to be in by 7PM so as not to interfere with Trick "Or" Treating.
On Monday October 26th the Assistants to the President visited and spent the nught. I enjoy their visits and try and learn as much as I can from them. I asked Elder Jensen who is about to return home "What one thing he'd pass on to other missionaries?" His answer "Missionaries need to know that they can go to our Heavenly Father in prayer and find out their investigators concerns and then they'll know how to resolve them". This reminded me that I need to rely on the Lord for answers and help. It seems as missionaries start to understand what they are doing and how to do it thhey start to rely more on their own wisdom and not the Lord's.
While on slits with Elder Jensen we ran into Earnest a 7th Day Adventist. He didn't seem to interested at first and talk about what day the Sabbath was. We knew we were not going to argue so Elder Jensen asked him "which is more important - when we worship OR how we worship?" This made Earnest more defensive and upset. so I just said "I know Joseph Smoth was a prophet and before I could get much further he interrupted me and I thought he was going to jump down out throats, but he just smiled and said he wanted to talk more to us when his preacher could be present. Elder Jensen aked "will your preacher want to argue or listen?" I felt like we should go so I said "we'd love to come back and share a message with you." We set up a time for later that day. When I returned with my companion Elder Everton Earnet seemed a bit surprised to see us. He invited us in and said that his minister would not arrive for a while. So we shared our message and I know he felt the spirit. On our way out his minister arrived. We said hello to him and left. He's lost some members from his congregation to our's and Lorrie is about to convet as well. For some reason I've felt that we need to go talk with him, so I feel we'd better follow the spirit. I am excited to see where our discussions with Earnest will lead.
