February 2004
Missionary Training Center Provo Utah
and Farmington New Mexico
February 24, 2004 - Jared's first assignment is in Farmington, New Mexico. Farmington is located in Northwest New Mexico, near the 4 corners, adjacent to Farmington is the Navajo Indian reservation. Farmington is also the home of the Church's 63rd stake the Farmington New Mexico Stake (called the Young stake when organized in 1912). The Farmington stake is the oldest stake in New Mexico. [Since nothing was mentioned in Jared's letter about his companion we think he was sent on to Farmington by himself.] He reported that he was excited being in the field and ready to go to work.
February 23, 2004 - Jared departed for Albuquerque (probably on Sky West Delta Connection Flight 3978) from Salt Lake International at 8:50am (delayed 30 minutes by FOG) arriving in ABQ at 10:21 AM. Alberquerque weather was mostly cloudy with rain. Jared is pitcured at the left with President and Sister Mansell. President Mansell is in the final months of his assignment. He returns home on July 1, 2004. President Mansell reported that Jared arrived safely through he seemed to be a bit tired after getting up at 5AM in Provo for the trip to Albuquerque. [Height wise it appears the Mansell's would be more at home in Japan. Jared is just 6'0"]. Jared reported that on the way to the mission home they stopped at the Albuquerque temple. He said "It was much smaller than I expected." After visiting the mission office they went to the Mansell's home for dinner and interviews.
February 21. 2004 - Jared wrote while doing his laundry and getting ready to depart for New Mexico. His MTC companion's name is Elder Matthew Jones who is from Chicothy Ohio. Jared says "he has a great testimony and desire to serve". We leave the airport on Monday at about 8:15 in the morning and then fly forever..... just kidding the flight lasts for about an hour and a half. But I am getting excited. My mission bounday includes Kanab Utah. It would be weird to serve there. Our teachers here have been great but I particularly like brother Kay. "He is so sincere".
February 17, 2004 - Jared reported that his district at the MTC is made up of 6 Elders and 4 Sisters ALL going to Albuquerque New Mexico. Two of the Elders (Fry and Hymus) like to play basketball and enjoy other things that I do.
He wrote "...just so everyone knows my district is awsome".
Jared departs for Albuquerque on Monday February 23rd. He wrote "don't come to see me. Saying goodbye once was hard enough".
"I miss your smiling faces, but I know this is what I should be doing. There is a special spirit that has allowed me to do things I never thought I could possibly do. My testimony grows every day and so does my love for my Savior".
"I am starting to get excited to get into the mission field. I just pray I get a good trainer and that I would get discouraged if I dont't have success right away. I know that as I work hard I will see blessings in your lives and mine"
February 10, 2004 - Jared reported that "I'm really starting to feel the spirit and getting excited to serve in New Mexico. I know there is a special spirit her at the MTC and without it I could not be doing the things I am". He adds "thing here are a lot different since they decided missionaries are not to memorize the discussions". He adds "I have three classes a day, eat three times a day, and ocassionally have a time for exercise (once so far). "It's a lot of work but I am beginning to love it and loose myself in the work.
February 6, 2004 - In Jared's safe arrival letter he wrote "Can't write long, they are keeping us very busy and I guess that's a good thing. It keeps me from getting home sick.". He added "I know that what I'm doing is right, but it's still hard because of all I feel I gave up". P.S. "I'm learning to love my companion".
February 4, 2004 - Jared enters the MTC in Provo, Utah beginning 2 years of missionary service.
