December 2004
Grants, New Mexico
December 27, 2004 - Jared wrote "I don't know what to say since we just talked on Christmas". Talking to you on the phone felt weird, but I enjoyed it. We've had a lot to do today but not many miles to do it with. Good thing this month is almost over. Christmas to me did not feel like Christmas. I don't know if it was because I was not at home or because I did not watch "Christmas Vacation" on Christmas eve. Time is starting to go as fast as people told me it would and now they are telling me it will go even faster. I wish I had more time in this area. I know it is getting ready to boom and I think I'm going to miss that boom again."
December 25, 2004 - In his Christmas day call home Jared said "things are going great and he's busy training his new companion Elder Derek Nielsen.". He told us he was glad to be able to have 6 more weeks in Grant's. He described his district which includes himself and his companion in Grants, a pair of Elders up the road the Thoreau, and a pair of Sisters who work in Crownpoint. He told us the Crownpoint branch in Indian country has 1200 members of which about 40 are active. Many were baptized years ago hpoing to be a part of the Lamanite placement program. The Bluewater ward in Grants dates back a long time. He and his companion are supposed to work that ward as well, but have not had much time to work in it. There are also two senior couples serving in the district boundaries.
He assured us he's feeling better about 95% of full strength.
We were able to speak with Lorrie Seena whom he baptized just after Thanksgiving.
December 20, 2004 - I'm still in Grants New Mexico and things here are "still just crusin along. We have Brenda committed to baptism (she basically committed herself). Cynthia is progressing well, but it will take some more time before she is ready."
".. this will be my first Christmas away from home. It's different but it is also kinda neat since people are taking us into their homes and letting us be a part of their family and share Christmas with them".
I almost had to beg President Koyle to let me stay here. He told me I have 6 more weeks and that I should use them wisely. I don't know what's happening with transfers on January 25th, but I'm most likely moving somewhere else at that time. Elder Everton went to Soccoro (southern most part of our mission) and I was assigned to train Elder Nielson from Kalispell Montana.
We went back to visit Earnest again (the 7th Day Adentist). He wanted to bash about the Sabbath day, but I resisted and just shared with him scripture chain found in "A Marvelous Work and a Wonder". It made so much sense to him that I think he believed I was making it up (he caanot read himself). We told him we would get a copy of the Book of Mormon on tape so he could listen to it. He agreed to do that.
He concluded by telling us he got a speeding ticket (10 over) comng home from a district meeting in Threau. He added he avoided getting the violation on his record since Lorrie (the lady he recently baptized) works in the municipal court and her farther is a police sargent. Since he was cited by a state trooper he was not sure how this all worked out. He did have to pay a $55 fine however.
December 16, 2004 - Lorrie who Jared baptized on November 26th e-mailed us to let us know that Jared is still in Grants and has been very busy because he is now training a "greenie".
