August 2004
Albuquerque and Placitas New Mexico
August 30, 2004 - Jared e-mailed to say that there is nothing new to report about the work in Placitas. He corrected his former information saying that there are 3 LDS families living in Placitas canyon. He reported that he's lost so much muscle mass that he needs some new shirts! In his letter he said "I can't believe summer is over!"
We had zone conferece on the 25th and it was really good. President Koyle talked about getting parents of families to progress at the same pace. We also did a lot of skill building and I think that always helps me. I also had exchanges with the zone leaders and learned from them.
We had an investigator come to church yesterday and that's always exciting. Our teaching pool is up to 3 and we are working hard hoping that they will be touched by the spirit.
August 23, 2004 - Jared reported that they have a single investigator who they meet with once per week. He added that there are no members of the Bernalillo ward who live in Paclitas canyon. He said that he enjoys working with the other 6 members of his district and that he learns from them and hopes they learn from him.
He said that they have one other investigator who has dropped out saying this his prayer's about "what's his name" being a prophet had not been answered. Jared remarked "I think that when Moroni said to pray wih real intent and full purpose of heart" that it would include knowing the name of the person whom you are praying about.
Since the number of missionaries serving is dropping so fast the New Mexico mission will have to close 3 residences from the mission on September 20th. Jared believes that Placitas will be one of those 3 residences to be closed and that he will be serving elsewhere on September 21st.
August 16, 2004 - Jared e-mailed to say that he is very busy trying to get organized in his new area Placitas New Mexico - a hilly and wealthy area northeast of Albuquerque (part of the Albuquerque West Stake). He said his new companion is Elder Barney. He found that the former Elders had nothing going in this area so he again gets to start to build the teaching pool from 0 (zero). He said he is learning his duties as district leader, but feels some missionaries in the district are not interested in listening to a missionary with 6 months experience.
In his letter he described Placitas as "rich country". While tracting they found a home for sale. Price $1,050,000. It would have been just $ 850,000 but it has a marvelous view on the top of a bluff. Placitas is basically a canyon about 8 miles long. We live in a home (a small one) about 5 miles up the canyon.
Elder Barney his companion is from Portland Oregon and is a convert of about 5 years. Jared says "he is quiet and shy, but a good kid".
The best thing we've got from tracting so far is "a diet coke and some wild grapes". We will keep praying and working to find someone to share the message with.
August 9, 2004 - Jared wrote to tell us he was again transferred. Now he is headed to Placitas a wealthy and hilly area northeast of Albuquerque. Placitas is a part of the Bernalillo Ward, Albuquerque West Stake.
Jared said he learned the news like this. When we came in on Saturday night there was a message on our answering machine for me to call the assistants. So I called. Then they instructed me to call President Koyle and I got nervous. So I called President Koyle and first thing he asked to put me on hold to extend the anticipation. When he came back on the line he asked how things were going and then asked if I was ready for more responsibility and I said "yes". He then said we are going to call you as district leader in Placitas. I was shocked. He then asked if I could handle it and I said "yes".
Jared reported "We'll the mission is continuing to change and I think a lot of the missionaries are struggling to keep up. President Koyle changed Zone boundaries and went to a co-Zone leader organization. Jared lamented that just when he has gotten comfortable where he is serving transfers come. I learned to love the Sage Ward. I am confident that Elder McAllister will do a fine job finishing what we stareted. "It is a lot to take on but I am willing to try because President Koyle has already earned my respect and I know this is what God wants to do at this time".
August 8, 2004 - Sister Giras called to say that Jared was to be transferred on August 10th to another part of Albuquerque to serve as District Leader (and we assume become senior companion). She said he was generally upbeat about the news. Next transfers September 21st.
August 2, 2004 - Jared was beginning to get anxious about the first transfers under President Koyle on August 10th. The teaching pool in the Sage ward has grown and he'd like to see how the investigators progress. He said "we have a lot of cool people we are starting to work with, I'm just scared I am going to be transferred before I see them baptised, but I guess that is how it will be in many of the areas I serve in, the important thing is that they get baptised." We had our first 2 hour planning session last Friday at 9:30. It was weird not to be out the door. "I felt like I was sinning". We had a great discussion with the Farias family last week.
