April 2004
Farmington New Mexico
April 26, 2004 - Jared writes "Things out here are continuing to go well. We have had a lot of success. We now have 4 people committed to baptism and 2 of the 4 have firm baptismal dates.
Elder Landon has a technique for tracting trailer parks. He first tries the door knob to see if it is locked or not. One time this backfired as a group and drunk and angry Navajos answered the door and started yelling at us. I thought we were going to end up in a fight.
They are also teaching a sister who is a member but who has been away from the church for a long time. Her husband is also listening to the message of the gospel. Jared thinks the husband will be baptized in time.
Jared added he is looking forward to calling home on May 9th "Mother's Day".
April 19, 2004 - Things are going good and we are real busy. Katrina (the daughter) was baptized on Saturday April 17th. Her mom wasn't quite ready, but she gave us her coffee pot so we think it will just be a short time before Becky is baptized. An Elder in the ward who is preparing to leave for the Carlsbad California mission performed the baptism. Katrina's grandmother attended the baptism and is now taking the discussions. The Ettsidy family needs some more teaching before they'll be ready but they area doing well. We have lots of investigators and the ward is excited about everything that is happening.
I'm worried I may be transferred May 18th. Our ZL Elder Moteus is going home and they will need more leadership here. That may mean I'll be moving on. I am comfortable here in Farmington now and don't want to leave. Elder Landon and I are doing well and having fun together. When Elder Landon is with Elder Moteus I'm with his companion Elder Collum who is greener than I am.
April 12, 2004 - Things are going good here we have a baptism on Saturday April 17th for Becky and Katrina (mother and daughter). The Ettsidy family is scheduled to be baptized on April 24th. The Navarros (our investigators) were married this past week and we attended their wedding. It was a different experience since I'd never been to a wedding before and this was a "Spanish" wedding. After the ceremony we talked with the minister who performed the marriage. He was a nice guy but his church was lacking. At a reception held afterwards someone pointed out that we didn't have any wine, so the minister said "come on boy's we must turn this water into wine". My reply was simple and direct "I'm sure one of us has the authority to do it". He looked puzzled like he didn't understand my point! We are teaching lots of people, but few of them seem to keep their commitments.
Unfortunately Jared's Easter package arrived at the Culler's residence via FedEx. Brother Culler works for UPS. Sherry thought she'd sent it UPS, that was her intention anyway.
April 5, 2004 - Tuesday April 6 is the first transfer day since Jared's arrival. Transfer days come every 6 weeks (typical for missions in the United States). Not much is changing for him. His companion Elder Landon was named District Leader for the Farmington district with the changes. Jared said only 3 of the 10 missionaries in Farmington are leaving.
Sherry talked to Sister Culler on the phone on Tuesday March 30th. She called to say that Jared was doing well and that he and Elder Landon were doing well teaching several investigators. Sister Culler also provided the picture of Jared and his companion Elder Landon.
Jared reported that several appointments during the last week feel through and that was disappointing. He did attend general conference and after the Priesthood Session President Fishburn (counselor in the mission presidency) took the Elders to eat at Red-Lobster. At the time Duke was playing Connecticut and the eyes were fixed on the TV's. They left before the game was over but President Fishburn gave them play-by-play from his walk-man. Jared concluded that the President could given them play-by-play but not the radio announcer.
A mother and daughter are scheduled to be baptized soon. Sister Gray has some issues to deal with so her baptism has been postponed. Additionally a family of 3 is scheduled to be baptized on the 24th, but so far only the mother of the family has been to church.
Jared said on P-day they have district gospel study at a church followed by basketball and then return home to shower, write letters, shop and mail letters.
Jared reported that his "door approaches are": (1) we are sharing a message about Jesus Christ or (2) if a prophet of God were here today would that make a difference to you?
